Neotropical Region

Neotropical SubregionNeotropica includes all of South America, north through Central America to the Mexican Plateau. The region is inhabited by 218 species (41 genera) in four families: Unionidae, Hyriidae, Mycetopodidae and Etheriidae.

The Central America Subregion (NT1; 24 gen, 102 spp.) includes Mexico south of the Rio Grande to the Isthmus of Panama. The fauna consists largely unioinid genera, and presumably those various lineages had their origins in the Nearctic Region. We regard Central America as part of the Neotropical Region due to the observed degree of genus-level endemism.

The remainder of the subregions are portions of South America proper. The Magdalena-Pacific Subregion (NT2; 5 gen, 13 spp.) is the area between the Isthmus of Panama and the Andes Mountains in the northwest. The Orinoco-Guayana Subregion (NT3; 10 gen, 35 spp.) Orinoco basin east to the Guayanas. These basins are north of the Amazon Subregion (NT4; 16 gen, 38 spp.), composed of the whole Amazon Basin. The Atlantic coastal streams (including the São Francisco) in eastern Brazil comprise the Atlantic-São Francisco Subregion (NT5; 5 gen, 20 spp.). The Paraná-Paraguay Subregion (NT6; 11 gen, 64 spp.) is composed of all the rivers draining via the Rio de la Plata and the coastal streams of Uruguay and southern Brazil. Finally, the Patagonia Subregion (NT7; 2 gen, 3 spp.) includes southern Argentina and Chile.

Endemic species are marked with an asterisk (*).
