The MUSSELp is hiring!

Posted 15 August 2003. We are no longer accepting applications for this position.

We are seeking a full-time research/curatorial assistant to help with, among other things, the MUSSEL Project. This is a 3 year position based at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The ANSP has a long and productive tradition in malacological research, and this position will continue that.

Most of this position will be paid by an NSF award to revise the systematics of the Etherioidea, the Gondwanan freshwater mussels. In addition, we are compiling a comprehensive taxonomic database of all freshwater mussels. The remainder of the position will be supported by a grant from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility to georeference the mollusk collection database in the Malacology Department in the Academy's Center for Systematic Biology and Evolution.

A job description is posted on the Academy's employment web site (#879). Duties will include such things as specimen and literature data capture and management; georeferencing; digital imaging; specimen curation; web page development; and assisting with phylogenetic analyses.

A bachelors degree or equivalent experience in biology or related discipline is required, and this is definitely a job for someone who is very confident in their computer skills. Our desired applicant has an interest in mollusks, especially freshwater mussels, and a familiarity with world-wide geography. The annual salary range is $22,000 to $27,500 depending upon experience and abilities.

Interested applicants should send, via post or e-mail attachment, a resume (or cv) and the names and contact information of three references to:
