The MUSSELp is hiring!

Posted 20 April 2006. We are no longer accepting applications for this position.

We are seeking full-time research/curatorial assistance with our NSF-funded MUSSEL Project. This is a 12-15 month position (with extension possible) based at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The ANSP has a long and productive tradition in malacological research, and this position will continue that.

The primary aim of current MUSSEL Project funding is a revision of the Etherioidea, the Gondwanan freshwater mussels. Other on-going research projects include a survey of the lower Congo River. We have already compiled a comprehensive database of specimen records and taxonomic information. There is a lot of text about our progress, research travels and data available at the MUSSEL Project Web Site.

A job description is posted on the Academy's employment web site (#932). Click here to download a pdf of the job description. Duties may include such things as specimen and literature data capture and management; georeferencing; digital imaging; specimen curation; phylogenetic analyses; and assisting with manuscript preparation. There may also be opportunities for independent research, depending upon qualifications.

As documented on our web site, we have accumulated a large volume of data over the past 2.5 years, more is still coming in, and we need help to manage and analyze it all. We are interested in applicants at all levels of experience, although a B.A. or B.Sc. in biology or related field is required. This would be an ideal position for a beginning researcher transitioning between a bachelors or masters degree and further graduate studies. The annual salary range is $25,000 to $35,000, depending upon experience and abilities.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions about this position or the MUSSEL Project.

Interested applicants should send, via post or e-mail attachment (preferably the latter), a resume (or cv) and the names and contact information of three references to:
