Checklist of the Freshwater Mussel Species of the Nile Basin
(and Northern Africa)
Twenty-eight species of freshwater mussels (in four families) are known from Northern Africa. Most of these are found in the Nile River, which flows from the Central African Great Lakes (i.e., Victoria, Albert and Edward) northward through Cairo and onward to the Mediterranian.
