Global Distribution of the Margaritiferidae. The thin purple wedge of the pie depicts the relative species diversity of the family (13 of 887).

The Margaritiferidae consists of only 13 recognized species, and although the distribution of the family is patchy, it is found in Nearctica, Palearctica and Indotropica. A number of genera have been recognized historically and in recent revisions. However, phylogenetic analyses have not supported those divisions, and we have simply opted to refer all species to Margaritifera.
